In Your Place
ICP-Bard MFA 2019 group show at A4 Arts Foundation in Cape Town
Opening Reception: Thursday, 11th July, 2019 [6 – 8pm]
Exhibition dates: 11th July – 1st August, 2019
A4 Arts foundation is pleased to host In Your Place, an exhibition of work from ICP-BARD MFA 2019.
This exhibition is cohered around an enquiry of the notions of “homeward” or “home”. Through the lens of image-making, these artists explore the meanings of these terms to different people. Interrogating concepts of space, history, memory, reckoning, places of refuge, the physical or psychological, the forced or liberated, for global immigrants and refugees to local communities seeking retreat to a place of safety. Pivotal questions emerge with regards to the notion of “home” as a place where we can truly just be ourselves, as somewhere that serves as a personal sanctuary.
The resulting work of the graduates of 2019 Bard MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies from the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York will be exhibited in Cape Town, at A4 Arts Foundation. In New York, at The Baxter St at the Camera Club, another exhibition exploring the theme of ‘body and identity’, by the same artists, will be shown simultaneously. These parallel exhibitions will endeavour to connect artists, audiences and inquiries across the continents.
“These cross-continental exchanges are an innovative way of extending and connecting communities across the world,” says exhibition curator and graduate, Pippa Hetherington.
“This will be a unique opportunity for artists and audiences to communicate in real-time across the globe. This novel concept builds an aspiration to invite inclusivity”, she says.
The ICP-MFA artists have been working alongside each other for two years during their MFA programme in New York, leaning inward and outward from one another, pushing and pulling to navigate their own practices, yet always sharing curious and communal questions about home.
This international group is made up of 12 visual artists from around the world: South Africa, India, Taiwan, Japan, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the US. The exhibition consists of a collection of photographic prints (scans, archival pigment, laser) and video-work.
Cross-continental exchanges will be staged on the following dates:
July 11 - NYC 12pm – 1:30pm / Cape Town 6pm – 7:30pm (coinciding with the opening)
Aug 1 – NYC 11:30am – 2:30pm / Cape Town 5:30pm – 8:30pm (culminating activation of the show coinciding with Cape Town’s First Thursdays)
Also programmed will be two ‘Coffee Talks’ to discuss the work and the exhibition concept. These will be on July 18 from 11am – 12pm and July 25, also from 11am – 12pm.
